The Tokyo National Museum

I have a recommendation for everyone planning to visit me in Tokyo!  東京国立博物館, or The Tokyo National Museum (upper left) has a beautiful collection of Japanese art and artifacts that basically walks a visitor through the first traces of human life on the Japanese archipelago, all the way through the development of Japan's unique aesthetic, often described by the terms wabi-sabi that defines Japanese art and culture.  The museum covers all kinds of Japanese art, artifacts, and architecture, such as 

• Buddhist and Shinto religious art and artifacts
• ink paintings
• calligraphy
• ceramics and the tea ceremony (see a tea house in the upper left) 
• textiles and kimono
• military attire
• folding screens and sliding doors
• laquerware (see lower right - a Japanese laquareware shrine from when Christianity was first introduced into Japan - very interesting!)
• interior furnishings and daily utensils (jewelry, hair ornaments, cosmetics tools)
• noh and kabuki theater costumes
• ukiyo-e woodblock prints

For 400 yen (with a student ID), you can take in the entire evolution of Japanese art, culture, and aesthetics - totally worth it!
