The kitchen counter was connected to a long wooden table on a raised platform. You sit at the table on cushions on the floor and your feet dangle down and rest in the sunken pit below the table.
Rice balls for lunch! The fillings were salmon, spicy chili miso paste, pickled plums and teeny little fried baby fish.

The bathroom - built for two to use at a time! Bathing is a social activity in Japan, so it's not uncommon to have a shower like this that can accommodate more than one person at a time. When taking a Japanese bath, you sit on a stool and use a tub (lower right) to help you wash as you use the shower handle. Once you're scrubbed and clean, you remove the lids on the bathtub that keep the heat in and soak until you're all warm. After you've soaked, you give yourself a quick rinse and then dry off, put on pajamas, and collapse on your futon.
